December News

The holiday season is upon us.  We have had the joy of caring for your children for almost 4 months now -- it's hard to believe it is going so fast!!!  We've enjoyed getting to know your children and watching them grow! It is fun to see how they are learning preschool morning routines. We can't wait to see what the rest of the school year brings!

2020-2021 School Year
Just a reminder that the district will be adding a PreK program next year, and this will be replacing Van Meter PreK. Registration for 4 year old PreK next school year will go through the school district.  An informational meeting will be set up by the district in January. Please see the elementary office with additional questions. We are excited for these changes taking place next year for our program and have been working with the district during this transition process!

Project Sharing Night
Please join us Thursday, December 12th from 4:30-5:30 for an Open House celebrating the children's work on the Light and Shadow Project.  Your entire family may come anytime to see children's work and try out some fun activities with light and shadows. Afterwards, stop in the cafeteria and help support our VMPK fundraiser during the elementary concert by buying pizza! Please let me know if you are willing to donate store bought baked goods.

Illness/Absence
If your child is ill or going to be absent from preschool, please be sure to call the preschool at 996-2030 to report their absence.  We appreciate your call.

DHS Visit
The Department of Human Services came out for our annual site visit earlier this month and have renewed our license. We are also proud to continue to be a 4 star QRS (Quality Rating Scale) program!

   Delays and Cancellations
In the event of delays or cancellations, we will follow the Van Meter Schools.  They will post this information on Channels 5, 8 and 13, as well as their website www.vmbulldogs.com.  If they delay school 1 hour, we will hold our school day beginning one hour later than usual, or 9:30 a.m. If the Van Meter Schools cancel or delay for 2 hours, our Pre-Kindergarten WILL NOT MEET  that day.
Holiday
Celebration
On Thursday, December 20th,  we will be having a Holiday Celebration! We are going to "snuggle up and read" for our holiday party. Children may wear their pajamas to school and bring a blanket and stuffed animal. We will be having hot cocoa and enjoy some hands-on holiday activities.
To help us celebrate during our holiday festivities, we are in need of a few families to bring holiday themed plates and napkins.  We would also love to have some "guest readers" join us for our cozy reading time.  Please let me know if you are willing to help read stories to groups of children for about 20 minutes that day.

Weather
We will continue to hold outdoor large motor activity time as long as the weather cooperates.  We use the Child Care WeatherWatch guidelines produced by the Healthy Child Care Iowa to determine if the Wind Chill Factor is safe for outdoor play.  We will continue to go outside until the temperature and/or wind chill is at or below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.  Certain temperatures allow us to go outside, but for only a short time.
Please be sure to send all the clothing
(warm coats, hats, mittens, snowpants) needed to keep your child warm and comfortable!  Because they are learning to become more independent, we do ask them to at least try to get dressed themselves. This means putting on their own coat, hat, mittens, zipping, etc.
(Mittens are much easier for them to become successful on their own.) If needed, we will assist them.  Their reactions are priceless though when they figure out they really can do it!!
Also, when there is snow on the ground,
please be sure to send boots!  The children will not be able to wear them in the classroom however, so an additional pair of footwear is needed to wear inside.
