MWF November 2018

Welcome to Fall!!

Fundraiser
Thanks for everyone who participated in the RADA fundraiser this year!

What is the Value of Play?
Each month, we feature a different learning center in our classroom and why play in that center is so important for young children! The article below highlights developmental learning goals met through puzzles.
              Puzzle Center

Cognitive Development
"Cognitive learning is characterized by comprehension, organizing ideas and applying knowledge through choice and evaluation. When children play with puzzles, they learn the power of choice and strategy as they begin to recognize and thoughtfully understand how pieces fit together to complete a larger picture.

Fine Motor Development
Playing with puzzles requires children to grasp pieces of all shapes and sizes and manipulate them to fit exactly into a cutout shape or slot. This process can involve sorting and testing of various shapes until the right one is found. Through this task, children develop small muscle movements and dexterity in their hands and fingers.

Memory
When working to complete a puzzle, children have to rely heavily on their ability to remember which shapes work together to complete the picture. If a piece doesn’t fit, the child will set it aside, but will still need to remember its shape and color in relation to the rest of the puzzle."

Illness
If your child is sick and unable to come to school please call us at 996-2030. After hours, this goes to voicemail. If you know your child will not be at school in the evening or early morning, feel free to leave us a message before or after preschool.

Combat Hunger

The third grade math classes have joined forces with STAR 102.5’s COMBAT HUNGER to benefit the Food Bank of Iowa. The preschool will be participating as well! Below is a list of their themes. Feel free to bring a theme item, or any item which will help feed the hungry. We will collect the items in our classroom.

11- 9 FRIDAY: Fruity Friday (canned fruits AND 100% fruit juices) No glass containers.

11-12 MONDAY:  Meaty Monday (canned tuna, chicken, fish, spam, or peanut butter, or SOUPS)

11- 13 TUESDAY: Toiletry Tuesday (soap, toothpaste, deodorant, diapers, toilet paper)

11-14 WEDNESDAY: Veggie Wednesday (canned veggies)

Weather
As the leaves change, so does the weather! Although the afternoons tend to be warmer, the mornings when we go outside are usually cool.  Please be sure to send all the clothing needed to keep your child comfortable.

We will continue to play outside for gross motor activity, as long as weather permits We use the Child Care Weather Watch guidelines produced by the Healthy Child Care Iowa to determine if the Wind Chill Factor is safe for outdoor play.  We will not go outside if the wind chill is at or below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.  On other days, please be sure to send all the clothing needed to keep your child warm and comfortable!

We encourage independence in dressing in preschool. Please help your child practice zipping at home. Mittens also enable children to be more independent. Once the snow begins to fall, please be sure to send boots. The children will not be able to wear them in the classroom so an additional pair of footwear for them to wear inside is also appreciated!

Delays and Cancellations
As we prepare for winter, in the event of delays or cancellations, we will follow the Van Meter Schools.  They will post this information on Channels 5, 8 and 13, as well as their website  www.vmbulldogs.com.  If they delay school 1 hour, we will hold our school day beginning one hour later than usual, or 9:15 a.m. If the Van Meter Schools cancel or delay for 2 hours, our Pre-Kindergarten will not meet that day.

Physicals
Just a reminder that we must have a copy of your child's physical exam that has been completed within the last 12 months.
